The WNBA Feels Like An Afterthought
NBA 2K22 does bring back The W if you want to forge your own WNBA career. While this mode laid a great foundation last year, it's disheartening that Visual Concepts didn't build off it more for NBA 2K22. The only significant addition is practicing with other WNBA stars to learn their skills alongside some gameplay improvements to better mirror the women's game, especially in the passing department. However, the mode feels vacant of meaningful interactions and rewarding content. When it comes to NBA 2K23, the WNBA side needs to become a more significant focal point.
Immediate Server Issues
Yes, there are still various bugs, glitches, and technical issues that have always appeared in NBA 2K. While most of the NBA 2K22 was fine, the servers were down the night it dropped. That meant players couldn't do a lot of things that they wanted to. Twitter was filled with people sharing their frustrations with this and reminding everyone that this wasn't the first year it happened.
Some Legends Are Outdated
A significant aspect that separates this gaming franchise from other sports is the inclusion of so many legends. Classic teams are spanning several decades, all-time rosters featuring the best players in each team's history, and that's more than any other game can offer.
However, it's been too long since the last massive update to the renders on the classic and all-time team rosters. Some renders of legendary players that are still in the game from what appears to be Gen-3 tech.
Players like George McGinnis, Oscar Robertson, Rick Barry, and others desperately need updated renders. With Legends playing such a significant role in MyNBA, MyTeam, and Play Now Online, cleaning this game area up should be a priority.
Some Animations Are Clunky
The motion capture in NBA 2K22 is exceptional. Star players have their animations baked into the game, making it feel like you are genuinely playing with real athletes, not randomly generated characters. NBA 2K22 is full of more subtle new animations, too, including a neat camera cut that rubs a perfect release on a three-pointer in your opponent's face.
Despite the graphics being strong, gamers have noticed that a few animations do come across as clunky. It might be while you're running a fast break, it might be when you're trying to pull off a slick pass, or it might be when you collide with your defender, but you'll notice things don't look nearly as smooth as they should, which might keep this installment out of the conversation for the best basketball game ever.
Too Many Microtransactions
In-game microtransaction is one of the worst and predatory aspects of the NBA 2K series, and the NBA 2K22 doesn't seem to fix it. While you don't necessarily have to spend any VC and 2K MT to increase stats and attributes, it requires massive amounts of grinding. Both the MyCAREER and MyTEAM modes are 2K Sports' cash cows, making the progression slower and challenging for players who aren't willing to spend any money on some virtual currencies. It's tough to ask players to pay extra for so many little things after already taking their $60 for the game itself.
